Diwali Activity Week at Umang Learning Center: A Festival of Light, Learning, an
d Joy

This year’s Diwali Activity Week at Umang Learning Center was a magical, colorful journey that brought out our young student's creativity, warmth, and infectious joy. At Umang, it was a week of witnessing brimming with activities and bright smiles, as the kids immersed themselves in the spirit of Diwali with pure enthusiasm and dedication. Here’s a look back at a week that celebrated the festival and a deep sense of tradition, gratitude, and community in our young learners.
Day 1: Diwali Card-Making
Our Diwali celebration began with a lively card-making session. The room was set up with colorful papers, stickers, glitter, and markers, all ready to spark creativity in our students. The children eagerly crafted personalized Diwali cards, pouring their heartfelt wishes into each one. Many chose to make cards for family members, and friends and some chose to make for some of our volunteers. Watching them focus on every stroke and carefully arrange decorations was heartwarming.
For some children, it was their first time creating cards, while others had tried similar crafts before. But no matter their experience level, each card became a unique expression of festive cheer and creativity. As volunteers, we encouraged them to think about the messages they wanted to share some simple, some deeply thoughtful. One student, Riya, wrote, “Happy Diwali! May this light bring happiness and smiles to everyone,” a message that reminded us all of the warmth Diwali brings.

Day 2: Diya Decoration & Lantern-Making
The next day, the focus shifted to a staple of Diwali decorations diyas, and lantern & Diya making. Each child received Colourful sheets and plain clay diya and a palette of vibrant colors to paint and decorate as they wished. We saw a wonderful range of designs some lanterns and diyas covered in intricate patterns, others adorned with bold, bright colors and delicate glitter detailing. The children were engrossed, laughing and chatting with each other as they painted their diyas, bringing them to life.

For many, this was more than a craft. They shared stories about how their families lit diyas and make lanterns at home, and some even talked about the significance of diyas in their own words. "Diya means spreading light, just like we should spread happiness," was a reminder that the simplest activities can bring joy and a sense of achievement.
Moving the lanterns adds a special glow to the night, creating these beautiful symbols of the festival. Some of the younger kids paired up with older ones, creating an atmosphere of support and cooperation.

Day 3: Diwali Celebration Full of Fun, Games, and Festive Treats
Day three was the most exciting day of the week a big Diwali celebration with games, sparklers, and a delicious spread of treats. The kids arrived dressed in bright, traditional clothes, and you could feel their excitement from the moment they walked in. The teachers and volunteers were ready to join the fun and make this day unforgettable for everyone.
We kicked off the celebration with games that brought loads of laughter and cheers. The kids played classic games. Watching them dash around with bright smiles and cheerful shouts. Moving to it was time for the highlight of the day: the firecrackers. We used safe, eco-friendly sparklers and small crackers so the kids could join in without any worries. Seeing them hold sparklers. Watching them, I felt so grateful to be part of a celebration that brought such simple joy to these children and made their Diwali magical.
As Diwali Activity Week came to an end, I took a moment to look back on the memories we had created together. Every day, the kids brought fresh energy, happiness, and creativity. This week wasn’t just a series of activities it was a time for the children to make memories that will stay with them.

Here’s to many more festivals filled with love, laughter, and light. Happy Diwali to all!
